Find out how to choose the right community service for you, and get the most out of helping others.
Whether it’s required by your school or you want it for your college applications, you’re probably being asked to volunteer more and more. Giving back and helping your community in a way that matters most to you will give you a sense of accomplishment that can change your life.

Which community service is right for you? Just ask yourself 3 questions:

1. What causes are you passionate about?
Animals, natural disasters, hunger — there are so many causes to choose from, so get involved with one that means the most to you. If you’re passionate about the cause, then your community service days will continue long after you’ve reached your last required hour.

2. How long do you have?
Time can be a tricky balancing act — you want to dedicate enough time to really make a difference, but you have to be careful not to overextend yourself. Juggling school, extracurricular activities, a part-time job and homework can get overwhelming. Volunteering should be complementary to your other activities.

3. What are you willing to do?
From donating your old clothes to improving public spaces to simply standing for a good cause, there are so many different ways to help make a difference in the world. Think about what type of activity fits your personality (and your busy schedule) and go for it!
