SEPTEMBER 10th – THE OPEN ROAD
The first completely paved route of coast-to-coast U.S. highways was announced on this day in 1913. The Lincoln Highway system ran through 14 states and stretched 3,000 miles from New York City to San Francisco.
Tip: The open road provides so many learning experiences. Draw a road and discuss the difference between dashed lines and straight lines. Next, discuss signs that you can find along the road and what they mean. If you are teaching colors at your house, practice drawing red, yellow and green circles with your little learner to know what the colors on a stoplight mean. For your older learners, use a map with highways marked on it and ask them what route they would take to get from city A to city B and what major cities they would pass through. There is no age limit to turning on your inner travel agent and discovering all the open road has to offer.
