PARENTS, DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON HOMEWORK
Sometimes it’s hard to decide who hates homework more: kids or their parents. One of the hardest things, for parents, is keeping on top of their kids’ homework while leaving enough space for them to develop their own good work habits. Here are a few ways in which you can help them succeed without helping too much:
- Keep in touch with the teacher to be fully aware of the quantity and quality of homework turned in.
- Set a schedule that includes a beginning and ending time. Give kids time to unwind after school and time for breaks.
- Hold off on rewards such as TV and video games until homework is complete.
- Create a designated study area at home with adequate light and few distractions. (That said, if your child studies better with music or other background noise, use it.)
- Be available so your child can ask questions, but don’t hover over them.
- Look over answers, but don’t correct work unless you have checked with the teacher. Patterns of errors help the teacher understand what a child needs to learn.
