OCTOBER 9th -- LEIF ERIKSON DAY

Since 1964, Icelander Leif Erikson has been getting equal time with Christopher Columbus.  Leif, the son of Viking outlaw Erik the Red, reached the shores of Labrador sometime around the year 1000, making him the first European to set foot on North American soil.

Tip:  While your geography skills might not readily include being able to locate Labrador, you can definitely help your little learners explore North America.  Discuss that North America is one of seven continents and review the map to the left to discover what countries reside in North America.  Challenge your older learners to name provinces, states, capitals, etc.  Everyone can explore something new today!
