OCTOBER 26th -- FEELING ERIE

The Erie Canal opened on this day in 1825, providing a route for travel and commerce between Lake Erie and the Hudson River.  It was the first major man-made waterway in the United States, and it took over eight years and more than $7.6 million to compete.

Tip:  Thumbs up or thumbs down?  Use this celebration of water to talk about will it float or won't it float?  Have your children gather a handful of household objects and guess if they will float or not.  Use the kitchen sink or bathtub time to see what floats (thumbs up) and what sinks (thumbs down).
