NOVEMBER – ELECTION DAY
In 1845, Congress set aside the first Tuesday in November as Election Day. Currently, Congress is working to pass legislation to make this day a federal public holiday called Democracy Day. The intent seemed to be aimed at improving voter turnout.
Tip: Encourage kids to read up on issues and where candidates stand by holding mock debates with each child “playing” a different candidate in the debate. You can choose current candidates or famous candidates from the past. Try Jefferson vs. Adams in 1796 or Lincoln vs. Stephen Douglas in 1860.
