NOVEMBER 28th - FIRST AUTOMOBILE RACE
The first automobile race was run on this day in 1895, from Chicago's Jackson Park to Evanston, Illinois, and back. J. Frank Duryea won in just over ten hours, averaging a cruising speed of about 7.5 mph. On the same day 100 years later, U.S. President Bill Clinton signed legislation to repeal the federally imposed 55 mph speed limit.
Tip: Have each family member make themselves into a car -- decorate yourself with signs or even decorate a box to wear as a car. Have an automobile foot race outside to see what the fastest car is at your house. For little learners this is a great opportunity to teach what the three colors on a stoplight mean by practicing circles/colors as you draw stoplights together.
