MAY 2ND – PUPPET POWER

On this day in 1955, on a local Washington, D.C. station, Sam and Friends made its television debut.  The black and white puppet show featured puppets Yorick, Harry the Hipster and an early version of Kermit the Frog doing lip-synchs and sketch comedy.  The program continued to evolve, and creator Jim Henson would take his Muppets to Sesame Street in the coming decade.

Tip:  Gather your art supplies and brown paper lunch sacks.  Have your children select a famous person or favorite book/television character to create as a puppet.  Have each child put on a puppet show without naming his/her puppet.  See how many guesses it takes you or others in the room to determine the name of the puppet.
