MAY 23RD – TURTLE DAY
The American Tortoise Rescue began World Turtle Day in 2000 to bring turtle conservation into global focus. Currently, all seven species of sea turtles are endangered, and land turtles are among animals most affected by human activities. This is the perfect time of year to organize relief efforts for our shelled friends; they spend much of the month seeking mates and establishing nesting areas.
Tip: Give your child the persona of a turtle for a given activity during the day, portion of the day or entire day. Ask him/her how a turtle would complete the given activity/task. From a turtle's perspective, what might make this activity hard/easy, scary/exciting, etc. And while it might not be today, keep your eyes open for turtles and share the above fact about keeping our turtles special with your child.
