MAY 14TH – PACIFIC OR BUST
Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark left St. Louis on this day in 1804, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to find an overland route to the Pacific Ocean. It took them more than two years to make the round trip to the Oregon coastline and back to St. Louis.
Tip: Have your child create his or her own Lewis and Clark story. Who would they travel with on a journey from one place to another? Where would the journey start? Where would it end? What mode of transportation would they use? How long do they think it would take? What would they hope to see when they arrived at the destination? Have your child cut out pictures from a magazine to create the picture story or help them learn to spell key words in their story. Or simply create the story as you go -- over a meal, in the car or on a walk -- you ask the questions and your child supplies the creative answers. Let's just hope this tale does not take two years to tell!
