JANUARY 12TH - AMERICA'S FIRST WOMAN SENATOR

On January 12, 1932, Hattie W. Caraway won a special election to become the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.  Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas, was originally appointed in late 1931 to finish her late husband's term.  She went on to have a strong career implementing New Deal policies and working for women's rights, serving two more terms in office.
