ABC RAINY DAY FUN
April showers bring...kids that need indoor activities! Time for some ABC rainy day fun!
Rainy Day Letter Fun
- Roll a long "snake" out of play dough and tear off sections to form the letters in the words: RAINDROP, WET, COAT, UMBRELLA, BOOTS, PUDDLE and APRIL.
- Put white glue on a sheet of paper in the shape of the first letter of your child's name. Stick dry cereal, pom poms or crumpled tissue paper to it.
- Put pudding or whipped cream on a plastic placemat or wax paper and let your child use his finger to form names of people in your family.
- Make letters out of cookie dough, bake them, and then come up with as many words as possible with the letters you made.
Rainy Day Alphabet Book
Punch three holes in construction paper or copy paper and tie the pages together to make a book. Let your child decorate the cover. On the inside write the capital and lower case letters -- one letter on each page (for example, Bb). Give your child magazines and/or catalogs to search. Help your child find pictures that start with the letter of the day (in our example, a bear, bubble and balloon for the Bb page) and glue them into the book. Small objects can be used as well, such as a button. For even more fun, add photographs of friends, family and pets. Read it as a bedtime story each night!
Rainy Day Alphabet Games
Take turns, race the clock -- how many in 2 minutes? -- or just relax and think.
- Name as many foods as you can that start with F
- How many girls' names can you think of that start with A?
- How many words can you make out of the letters in the word RAINCOAT?
- Can you say a whole sentence in which every word starts with the same letter? (Snakes sit still. The tiny turtle takes taffy.) Be silly, be creative, have fun!
These ABC games are not only great fun, but they are also building blocks for writing success.™ Have fun on those rainy days with ABC games!
Happy Writing!
